Everyday Vacations

August 21, 2008
Take a Vacation Every Day

Is modern-day society leading to the extinction of free
time? It seems that the days of having plenty of time
to accomplish all of the normal day-to-day
responsibilities and having a bit of free time are
virtually gone.

How did this happen? All of the new technological
advances should be providing an abundance of free time.
Nearly everything has been automated in some way.
There are fast cars to transport us quickly to our
destination, dishwashers and robotic vacuum cleaners to
take care of household tasks, cell phones for immediate
communication and problem resolution, and computers to
speed up previously tedious tasks.

The problem seems to be that because we are capable of
doing so much, the expectations are higher. The bar
has risen. Our employers, our families and even we
have ever-increasing demands on our time. What can be
done to draw the line and hold on to a bit of sanity in
our lives?

One technique is to take a “vacation” every day. That
is not to say go away on a literal trip every day, but
rather take a break and do something enjoyable each
day. Allot some time each day whether it be thirty
minutes or even ten to do something truly enjoyable and
satisfying. For some this may mean doing nothing at
all. For others, it may mean doing something
meaningful that normally is not given full priority
over other obligations.

A sense of well-being can be accomplished with thirty
minutes of reading a good book, playing with the dog,
or simply relaxing under a big shade tree. Even ten
minutes of a relaxing activity can be extremely
beneficial in this day of non-stop constant on-the-go
activity. A ten minute rest for the eyes can really
add a spark to a dragging energy level. A quick walk
around the grounds can also offer a much needed break
and a chance to clear the mind.

Occasionally, when a greater amount of time can be set
aside, mini-vacations or outings should be planned. It
is important to include some fun in everyday life.
Extreme work schedules can ultimately lead to burnout
and other serious problems. Amazingly, time off spent
doing enjoyable activities can actually lead to more
productivity in work and family responsibilities.

It is reported that many in Corporate America are not
taking their earned vacation time in full. And, if
they do manage to take a vacation, they are taking
their cell phones and personal digital assistants with
them. It is important to find a way to take advantage
of this valuable time off. In terms of value, it is a
matter of health rather than dollars and cents. The
health of the country depends on utilizing time off for
personal relaxation and pursuits.

With a little planning and discipline, a balance
between work and life can be realized.

Riches and the Giving Cycle

August 14, 2008

With riches comes responsibility. Responsibility to God, the Source of all riches, to myself, and to my children. I also have a responsibility to show thanks by giving back in some way, because the more I give the more I get; the cycle can continue endlessly and I never get poor again. Which brings me to another thought. The more you give the more you get, so doesn’t it make sense to give. If you are poor in finances try giving something away, preferably some of the little money you do have. Do it as a show of gratitude when you do have a little money and trust that you will get more. If you are poor in friends try being a friend. Give away a smile or helping hand to someone else. Trust me, it will come back to you.

The principle of giving can be applied to all areas of life. If you are feeling particularly poor in a certain area of your life just give something away and watch it come back to you. You may not see instant result, but you will see them eventually. I remember when my daughter was smaller but began growing out of her clothes, her crib, and toys. I began giving them away to people who needed them and pretty soon I noticed more blessings coming my way. I got a better job, a better place to live, and a better car. I didn’t look for those things, but they just happened (not really) to come my way. I was making room for more by letting go of what I had. It wasn’t out of desperation or guilt, but out of pure love. It felt good to give and I had no expectation of return because I was grateful for the chance to have it then give it away. That is how giving and gratitude works in wealth-building.

The Science of Getting Rich?

August 9, 2008

How can there be a science to getting rich? Sometimes we tend to think that the rich got that way by happenstance. Sure, some are born into rich families, but for the most part there is some method to how riches are attained. Some get rich through a windfall, some through hard work, and some through stepping on people to get what they have. There is a better way to get rich and it is a bit of a scientific method according to author, Wallace Wattles. His book, The Science of Getting Rich, is making it’s way around the internet and is the basis of the recent The Secret phenomenon.

I read the Science of Getting Rich before The Secret came out, but at that time I wasn’t ready for it. I was too deeply involved in sorting our personal issues. But a few months ago I got reacquainted with this great book. I downloaded the audio book and listen to it about once a month. It is simple to understand and gave me several “aha” moments. Getting rich is more about an attitude rather than a science. But when you follow the steps outlined in the book you’ll begin seeing a change in your attitude about money as well as a positive cash flow. It’s slow at first, but it increase as you continue to practice the methods in this book.

The incredible thing about this book is that it is freely available from several sources. Some people are selling it for a small fee but the original book is available as a .pdf download. Rebecca Fine over at http://www.scienceofgettingrich.net had the book available there as well as other resources to make your journey toward getting rich a fun one. She offers support through forum discussion and also has a course that you can set your own fee for. I encourage you to go over and see what it’s about and begin to change your life.

I do recommend that you get the audio book and listen to it often. There is always something new that I pick up when I hear it again. It is no problem to do other things while listening. When I am cooking, cleaning, or sitting under the hair dryer I listen. I even listen when I am going to sleep. The principles are being conveyed on a subconscious level so during my wakeful hours I am implementing the principles.

So is there a science of getting rich? I’d say so, but unlike science in school, this kind is more fun and more profitable. 😉

Got the Blues? Get Moving!

August 7, 2008

Feeling blue? At the end of your rope? Just can’t it anymore? On the verge of screaming? Well get moving!

Too many times we let our emotions reach a boiling point then we explode. Instead of allowing yourself to get all worked up, go and work out. Who has time for that you ask? Well you do as a matter of fact. All it takes to get the feel good hormones going is five minutes of rapid movement. No, not your mouth chewing on a chip, but your body.

You don’t need equipment or a gym membership just your body and a tiny bit of motivation. This moving method is called intervals and it only takes five minutes. The goal is to get your heart pumping for 1-2 minutes then rest. Do it again, then rest. This is intervals in the simplest terms. There is a lot of information on the internet about this type of program so I won’t go into details. The best thing type of exercise is that it burns calories quickly, even after you are done.

What kind of exercise can you do to get moving? How about good old fashioned jumping jacks? See how many you can do in a minute. Jump roping is another good one. Jogging in place or around your house. So your kids will think you have gone crazy, but who cares! Your main goal is blowing off steam in a constructive way. After you are done you’ll barely remember what you were upset about. Do this everyday and pretty soon nothing will be able to get you down plus you will have the added benefit of shedding a few pounds.

Now I know that what I’ve said hasn’t been backed up by data and a lot of statistics, so you can search for that kind of information yourself on the internet. My only goal is to motivate you to move so you can feel better. The clearer your mind the better you will feel about creating wealth for yourself. Now get movin’!
